United States Cellular Corporation to Layoff 4000+ Employees

U.S. Cellular has announced plans to lay off over 4,000 employees at its headquarters located at 8410 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., Chicago, IL, effective April 7, 2025. This decision was disclosed through a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice.
This move follows a series of strategic adjustments by U.S. Cellular in response to evolving market conditions.
In November 2024, the company reported a net loss of $79 million for the third quarter, attributing the downturn to a $136 million impairment charge related to high-band spectrum licenses.
Despite these financial challenges, U.S. Cellular noted growth in fixed wireless customers and improvements in postpaid metrics during that period.
In December 2024, the Chicago Department of Aviation signed a lease for 99,421 square feet at 8420 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., adjacent to U.S. Cellular's headquarters. This lease aimed to accommodate contractors involved in the O'Hare 21 modernization project.
The upcoming layoffs will significantly reduce U.S. Cellular's workforce, which, as of September 30, 2024, comprised approximately 4,200 full—and part-time associates.
This development underscores the challenges faced by U.S. Cellular as it navigates the competitive telecommunications landscape and seeks to align its operations with current market demands.
