United Medical Center to Lay Off 485 Employees Amid Upcoming Closure

United Medical Center (UMC) has announced plans to lay off 485 employees from September 30, 2025, to various dates as part of its ongoing business transformation.
This decision coincides with the hospital's permanent closure, scheduled for April 15, 2025, which coincides with the opening of the new Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center on the St. Elizabeths East campus in Ward 8.
UMC, established in 1966 as Morris Cafritz Memorial Hospital, has undergone several transformations, including being renamed Greater Southeast Community Hospital in 1974 and becoming United Medical Center in 2008.
In 2010, it became part of the Government of the District of Columbia.
The hospital's leadership has expressed gratitude to the community for over five decades of trust and partnership.
They are committed to assisting patients during this transition, providing information on obtaining medical records, and offering guidance on alternative healthcare providers in the area.
The upcoming layoffs and closure mark a significant shift in Southeast Washington, D.C.'s healthcare landscape as services transition to the new Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center.
