Starbucks Implements New Rules: “Buy Something or Get Out”

Starbucks is rolling out a new code of conduct, putting an end to its policy that allowed people to hang out or use restrooms without making a purchase.

The giant coffee company says the new rules aim to create a better experience for paying customers and employees.

According to a Starbucks spokesperson, “The changes are a practical step that helps us prioritize our paying customers who want to sit and enjoy our cafes or need to use the restroom during their visit. By setting clear expectations for behavior and use of our spaces, we can create a better environment for everyone.” CNN reported.

Key updates include:

A ban on panhandling, discrimination, consuming outside alcohol, and vaping.

Free refills on coffee for in-store orders, served in ceramic mugs or reusable glasses, starting January 27.

These changes follow challenges with the previous open-door policy introduced in 2018 after a PR crisis when two Black men were arrested in a Philadelphia Starbucks while waiting for a friend.

The policy had welcomed all, but Starbucks’ leadership now says the open access created difficulties for employees and paying customers.

CEO Brian Niccol is also pushing for Starbucks to return to its roots as a “community coffeehouse,” with improved seating and perks for staying in-store.
