Urban One Expands Spanish-Language Reach with La Mega Media Partnership

Urban One Inc. is making a bold move to expand its reach within Hispanic communities in Ohio and Indiana, announcing a Local Management Agreement (LMA) with La Mega Media, Inc., and Lazo Media LLC.

This collaboration, effective November 1, 2024, marks Urban One's entry into Spanish-language programming in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis.

Urban One will now operate stations in these regions under the well-known La Mega brand, aiming to strengthen its commitment to serving diverse audiences in growing Hispanic markets.

Claudia DeLeon

Key to this strategic expansion is Claudia DeLeon, a recognized leader in Hispanic media, who has been appointed Vice President and General Manager of the Cleveland market and Head of Spanish Broadcast Operations for Urban One. DeLeon, most recently the Chief Operating Officer of La Mega Media, brings an impressive depth of experience to her new role.

Eddie Harrell, Jr., Co-President of Urban One’s Audio Division, emphasized the significance of this partnership and DeLeon's addition to the team, stating:

"We are thrilled to align with such a well-established brand in Ohio, one with a legacy of dedicated service to Hispanic communities in Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati. Equally exciting is the addition of Claudia DeLeon, a seasoned executive who brings a wealth of experience and talent to our team.”

Under this agreement, Urban One will broadcast La Mega’s Spanish-language content across four major cities on designated frequencies: 1300 WJMO-AM in Cleveland, 107.1 & 103.1 WWLG-FM & WWLA-FM in Columbus, 101.5 WIZF-HD2-FM in Cincinnati, and 105.1 WHHH-HD2 in Indianapolis.

In each of these regions, La Mega's programming will replace the previous La Grande brand, signaling a unified approach under one brand to amplify the presence of Spanish-language radio content.

The partnership represents a well-timed opportunity for Urban One, as Hispanic communities continue to grow rapidly in the Midwest.

  • David Kantor, CEO of Radio One Division, noted the relevance of this transition, remarking, "This rebranding marks a significant enhancement to our Spanish-language media presence in Ohio and Indianapolis, aligning with the needs of our audiences and meeting the growing demand in these rapidly expanding Hispanic communities. Our goal is to deliver high-quality, culturally relevant programming that reflects the vibrant and diverse lives of our listeners."

Kantor’s enthusiasm underscores Urban One’s intention to build a stronger connection with Hispanic listeners through music, news, and culturally resonant content.

Urban One’s foray into Spanish-language radio broadcasting is also bolstered by its ownership of Telemundo television affiliates in Columbus and Indianapolis, a move that positions the company as a key player in media tailored for Hispanic audiences.

With its extensive portfolio, including 72 revenue-generating broadcast stations across the United States, Urban One has firmly established itself as a leading media company for Black Americans and urban consumers.

Its new venture with La Mega Media reflects a commitment to broadening its scope and embracing the dynamic diversity of its listenership.

Urban One’s ambitious strategy and partnership with La Mega Media signal a new chapter in the company’s evolution.

By connecting with Hispanic communities in Ohio and Indianapolis, Urban One aims not just to expand its audience but to foster a deeper, culturally enriched experience for all listeners.
