TikTok Layoffs 2024: ByteDance Fires Hundreds of Employees

ByteDance (TikTok's parent company) laid off 700 employees at TikTok in favor of AI content moderation systems that the company has been testing for the previous few months.

The latest TikTok layoffs for 2024 just hit hundreds in Malaysia, according to a Reuters report.

Some news sources claimed that these TikTok layoffs affected not more than 500 employees but many prominent media outlets like ABPlive reported that more than 700 employees are affected by these job cuts.

  • Update: ByteDance confirmed to Reuters that in this wave of layoffs at TikTok not more than 500 people got fired.

However, ByteDance didn’t immediately respond to our email inquiring regarding the exact number of affected employees.

In the report, the company added:

“We are unable to give a precise figure at this time, owing to varying local employment regulation processes,"

It is a part of TikTok’s focus on AI and laying off 1,000 employees as the company said in May that it may lay off at least 1,000 employees worldwide on content moderation and marketing side.

Moreover, ByteDance going to invest $2 billion in its AI to handle harmful online content and boost its trust and safety initiatives for delivering a more controlled viewing experience for the end users.

In the news of a recent layoffs, GM laid off about 1,000 employees for favoring AI and this is happening almost at every tech company around the world.
