Threads may release a Fleets-like feature soon!
X (formerly Twitter) already said goodbye to Fleets (posts with 24-hour expiry) for no sound reasons.
Mark Zuckerberg’s Threads which is a direct competitor to Elon Musk’s X was caught testing a feature to let Threads users publish posts that will disappear and nobody will be able to recover them as they will be gone forever with their replies and likes etc.
As reported by TechCrunch, this was discovered by a reverse engineer Chris Messina who also stated that these 24-hour disappearing posts will not be shared to fediverse (a feature of Threads that makes your posts get shared over Mastodon and other ActivityPub protocol apps).
As Threads don’t have the power to get the posts deleted from fediverse, this fleets-like posts feature will not be integrated with Fediverse to make it work perfectly on Threads.
This means your posts will only be available exclusively on the Threads app and maybe on the web version too.
- In my opinion, this may also trigger Elon Musk to bring back Fleets as he’s trying hard to make X a great social media app that can compete with Meta’s offerings.
However, this Threads feature is still in under testing phase and it may never be released at all.
This is also great news for celebrities and public figures who don’t want to post permanent images or text, but are ready to share time-sensitive updates that disappear on their own.
As it is being dubbed as a Fleets-like feature, it is more like Stories on Facebook and Status on WhatsApp and also the same thing you see on Snapchat as Snapchat Stories.
Overall, it looks like social media is going to be a place where you will soon see people posting ephemeral posts only.
Only time will tell the truth, let's keep using these platforms for now.
