OpenAI GPT-4o mini is here to support ChatGPT

On Thursday in a surprise announcement for me, OpenAI introduced GPT-4o mini that’s just a mini upgrade for ChatGPT-4o to help the current model get a new version that’s faster and cheaper than the current plus plan.

The GPT-4o mini is being released today to every developer using OpenAI’s API and it will soon be in your hands too. You will be able to use the model on ChatGPT mobile apps and also on the web version.

“For every corner of the world to be empowered by AI, we need to make the models much more affordable,” said OpenAI’s Head of Product API, Olivier Godemont, in an interview with TechCrunch media and he added: “I think GPT-4o mini is a really big step forward in that direction.”

However, enterprise access to ChatGPT-4o mini will be provided by next week, the exact date is not confirmed yet.

Taking on Google’s Gemini and all other recently released small AI models, OpenAI’s latest update in ChatGPT called GPT-4o mini is dubbed as a faster, better, and cheaper alternative to all these small models other than the largest model by OpenAI which is GPT-4o.

OpenAI released GPT-4o mini in response to small AI models from other key players saying that GPT-4o mini is faster and cheaper than other industry leading small AI models.

While there’s already a free and faster version available in ChatGPT with the name of GPT-3.5, GPT-4o mini is replacing it with this new version that’s faster, smarter, and larger than GPT-3.5 but still cheaper than GPT-4o Omni.

As other AI and LLM developers such as Google’s Gemini 79% and Claude 75% showing high scores at MMLU, OpenAI claims that GPT-4o mini is far better than these tools which is capable of scoring 82% on MMLU for measuring reasoning in AI model.

The only down side of GPT4o mini is that it has a knowledge cutoff of October 2023 and can’t perform live searches. But the best thing is that you get a million input tokens for just 15 cents and a million output tokens for just 60 cents.

This will be the best choice for developers as the company says that GPT4o supports text and vision and video and audio features will soon be available for everyone.

So, overall, as per my understanding, it would be a great alternative to Gemini and all other small models of AI and would be best until we get to see ChatGPT 5.
