Dbrand Twitter Controversy, Offers Apology and $10,000 to Customer
Canadian tech accessory company Dbrand is facing significant backlash after a social media interaction with a customer turned racist and other X users came to support the Indian Dbrand customer who asked just a simple question regarding a product he purchased 2 months ago from Dbrand.
The incident happened on April 10th, when an Indian customer, named Bhuwan Chitransh, contacted Dbrand about an issue with a product by tweeting:
"@dbrand bought this skin a couple months back. Couldn't even remain the same color after just 2 months. What should I do?" tweeted by @BhuwanChitransh
Dbrand's response on X (formerly Twitter) mocked Chitransh's surname, sparking outrage online as they took it too far to be funny, they made it sound racist and controversial. Here's what Dbrand replied to Bhuwan Chitransh's tweet:
"Your last name is basically sh*t rash, be serious." Now deleted Dbrand reply to Bhuwan Chitransh's tweet
YouTuber Marques Brownlee, also known as MKBHD, threatened to halt future collaborations with Dbrand unless they addressed the situation and he publically posted this:
“Won’t be working with dbrand until that original tweet is deleted, at least. You’re allowed to make s**tty jokes, but the internet has made it pretty clear what it think about this one, and the harm from it is unnecessary.”
This, along with criticism from other prominent figures and customers, pressured Dbrand to apologize and even send $10,000 as a gesture of goodwill to the customer in question.
- The company publically issued an apology on X the following day, calling the incident a "huge fumble" and offering Bhuwan Chitransh $10,000 as a gesture of goodwill.
However, the $10K offer itself caused further controversy as the company said that they would never stop making jokes about others and there may be more people to get their $10K offer, with some finding it insensitive and disrespectful.
While Dbrand has been known for its edgy online presence for over a decade now, this "Dbrand Twitter Controversy" incident crossed a line for many.
The story has been widely covered by Indian and international media outlets, with headlines condemning Dbrand's actions.
It remains to be seen whether Dbrand can fully recover from this public relations nightmare as many X users are still replying to their tweets and saying that the company should say sorry and feel it whole heartedly and stop making fun of its customers.
Some are saying harsh words and bashing Dbrand to stop their poking habits and act like a respected company as it should be.
