Steps to Take After Moving into a New Home
Moving house is one of the most challenging experiences a person can go through. It involves both physical and mental labour. While you are likely excited for a fresh start, there is so much to do.
To make sure you don't forget something important, here are the steps you should take after moving into a new home.
Ensure Adequate Ventilation
Proper ventilation should be on the top of your list when you move into a new home. If the house doesn't have good ventilation, then you risk a damp or mould problem. Clean the vents, open the windows and let the air run through the home.
If you notice any mould growth, you must get it sorted as soon as possible. Otherwise, the mould spores might get into your lungs and cause damage. Plus, the mould will only get worse the longer you leave it.
Let mould experts take care of the problem. They won't just get rid of the initial problem, but they will also provide you with a long-term mould solution.
Check All Smoke Detectors
You need to check every smoke detector in the home before you get comfortable. In fact, it should be one of the first tasks you do.
Smoke detectors are crucial in any building, as they alert you to a potential fire. If one of your smoke detectors needs repairing, seek the help of an electrician as soon as possible.
Invest in Fresh Flooring
The right flooring completely changes the look and feel of a space. The chances are the flooring present when you move in is not exactly what you want, so invest in fresh flooring as soon as you can.
To make it easier, do it before you fill each room with your belongings. That way, you won't have to move everything out of the way!
Renovate the Bathroom and Kitchen
Much like the flooring, there's a high chance the kitchen and bathroom are not what you want.
If that's the case, work toward renovating them soon after moving in. This is especially important if repairs are required. The sooner you do it, the sooner you can work on settling in.
Check the Property for Leaks
Property leaks can lead to worse damage, such as structural and electrical issues. Walk through the house, paying special attention to corners and ceilings. If you notice even just a small leak, call a local plumber or electrician to investigate further.
Child/Pet Proof the Space
Do you have children or pets? If so, one of your first tasks is to either pet or child-proof the space. If your dog cannot go upstairs, put a gate at the bottom.
If you have young children, make sure nothing can topple over them and that all spaces in the home are child-safe. Do this early on to ensure their well-being.
Start with Repairs
Repairs are often part and parcel of moving into a new property. There might be faulty wires, or you might discover a leak in the roof. Whatever repairs need doing, start with them before moving on to decorating.
It's crucial to get professionals to do the work, too. You don't want to put yourself at risk by using dangerous tools or exposing yourself to harsh chemicals.
Unpack a Box at a Time
Trying to unpack all of your items in one go will only end in stress. Instead, focus on one box and one room at a time. Then, only move on to the next box once you have completed emptying the last one.
It's a good idea to label each box with the room's name. For example, your plates and mugs should be labelled 'kitchen'.
As an extra tip – pack a single box of essentials before you move. That way, your toothbrushes, pyjamas, chargers and other essentials are at hand.
Get to Know the Area
If you have moved to a new area, spend some time getting to know it. Walk around the local parks, visit the nearby café and check out community clubs. The sooner you know an area, the sooner you will feel comfortable. Plus, you might make some new friends.
Dig Up Old Plants and Weeds
Is the garden full of unwanted plants and weeds? If so, dig them up and get rid of them to make room for your new garden.
Perhaps you want an extended patio? Or, maybe you want to plant a vegetable garden? To start a garden project, you'll need to get rid of the old plants first. Hire a gardener if the work is heavy.
Do a Deep Clean
A deep clean is best done before you have a house full of belongings. Before you unpack, thoroughly clean every nook and cranny. Wash the windows, scrub the floors and dust the corners. If you want to ensure the house is spotless, consider hiring a professional cleaner.
Introduce Yourself to the Neighbours
It's always a good idea to introduce yourself to the neighbours when you first move in. You will be living near them for the foreseeable future, after all. A simple, 'hello, I've just moved in', will suffice! If it is summer, you might even catch your neighbours out on their front lawns.
Moving home is often hectic. Staying organised will make the move much easier. Follow these steps to settle into the new house sooner rather than later.
